Tense finale for women against Munich in Bundesliga Süd

On 21st August, we faced the team from Munich in the knowledge that we had to win both matches in order to overtake them in the table of the Bundesliga Süd and make it through to the DCB Final. And we did it!!!
In the first match, Munich won the toss and decided to bat first. We started off with tight bowling and fielding, putting enough pressure on the away team to create the run out of their hard hitting batsman Monique Theron for just 14 runs. All other batsman did not get into double figures and we had them at 56/6 in the 16th over. Unfortunately, we then gifted the opposition too many extras which took their total to 85/8 in their 20 overs. The wickets were spread between Asmita (2), Peris (2) and Franzi (1) as well as 3 run outs, throws coming in from Suzy (2) and Sharmaine (1).
Our reply didn’t start well, when Monika was run out in the third over and Sharmaine could not continue her recent good form either. It was the great partnership by Peris (9) and Asmita (12) which saw us over the line with 2 balls to spare, with some good running and keeping their nerves!

We won the toss of the second match and let the guests bat first again. All of their batsman failed to reach double figures and again, we took 8 wickets with Shizuka, Sharmaine and Franzi taking 2 each as well as Peris and Asmita 1 each. However, some way-ward bowling meant that we gave away a lot of extras and were set a challenging target of 99 runs to win.
Our batting innings started slowly and lost Sharmaine early on. The partnership between Monika and Peris then steadied the innings and some good middle overs meant that we were at 54 after 12 overs. With the loss of Peris, the run rate slowed down again and at 65 after 15 overs, the target seemed far away. However, the girls kept fightig and the combination of left-hander (Asmita) and right-hander (Monika) gave the Munich bowlers some difficulties in keeping their line. Asmita was then cleanly bowled which brought our japanese Newcomer Shizuka to the crease. She managed to take a single on the last ball of the 19th over, leaving 3 runs to get in the last over. Munichs Claudia was bowling the last over with Shizuka unable to connect with the first three balls, then taking a single, leaving two to win. Monika advanced down the wicket, missed the ball and was stumped for 26 runs. In came Suzy, with the instruction “whatever you do, connect with the ball – unless it’s a wide”. And with it being the last ball, she did connect and they ran! Shizu was always going for two – almost overtaking Suzy – and an overthrow meant that they scored the two runs required for the win!
We will now face the winner of the Bundesliga North in the DCB Final on 10th September.
